Toril Moi's Phenomenological Account of “Woman” and Questions of Trans Inclusivity

Abstract The recent debate in feminist philosophy about an adequate concept of woman presupposes the distinction between sex and gender, most proposals operate on gender level. Building Simone de Beauvoir, Toril Moi suggested account “woman” that does not rely (Moi 1999a). She criticizes this suggests too strong a separation bodily social dimensions person's identity. Instead, her centers around phenomenological “body as situation” or lived/living body ( Leib ). This understanding emphasizes subjective experience their own rather than third-personal (for example, medical) perspective humans’ bodies. With proposal, aims, one hand, to resist biological determinism, and, other, avoid dualism sex/gender distinction.
